Being prepared is the best way to stay safe! Here are some tips on how to manage inclement weather.
The key to staying safe is being prepared.
- Put Together an Emergency Kit: Prepare a Basic Disaster Supply Kit that includes one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food for 3-5 days per family member, a First Aid Kit, Medications, etc.
- Shelter & Evacuation Plan: Prepare a pre-determined location and determine how you will leave if you are advised to seek shelter or evacuate. At work, familiarize yourself with Silver Eagle’s Emergency Action Plan available at each branch.
- Tech Ready: Develop a communication plan to stay connected with friends, family, and work. Keep phones and battery-powered equipment charged in an emergency. Remember to store all important documents on a secure, password-protected drive or cloud.
If you’re driving during heavy rain or high winds, reduce your speed and keep plenty of room between your vehicle and others. It’s especially important to drive with caution if you’re driving a high-profile vehicle or if you’re towing a trailer. If driving is difficult, consider pulling onto the shoulder or into a parking lot and remaining in your vehicle while you wait for the severe weather to diminish.
- Heat Your Home Safely: If you plan to use a fireplace or space heater, be extremely careful. Have at least one of the following heat sources in case the power goes out:
- Extra blankets, sleeping bags, and warm winter coats
- A Fireplace that is up to code with plenty of dry firewood or a gas log fireplace
- Portable space heaters
- If there is a power failure:
- Use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns rather than candles, if possible. Candles can lead to house fires.
- Use generators and other appliances safely. (Do not store gasoline indoors where the fumes could ignite.)
- Make sure babies and older adults stay warm:
- Dress babies in warmer clothing such as footed pajamas, one-piece wearable blankets, or sleep sacks.
- Try to maintain a warm temperature inside your home. If you’re not able to keep your home warm, make temporary arrangements to stay elsewhere.
- Older adults often make less body heat because of a slower metabolism and less physical activity. Check on elderly friends and neighbors often to make sure their homes are heated properly. If you are over 65 years of age, check the temperature in your home often during extremely cold weather.
- Keep a Water Supply: Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes rupture or break. When you are expecting very cold or freezing temperatures:
- Wrap or insulate outside pipes to prevent freezing.
- Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously.
- Keep the temperature inside your home warm.
- Allow heated air to reach pipes
- When traveling in winter weather:
- Slow down, reduce distractions, and increase your following distance.
- Keep your vehicle maintained with regular tune-ups and maintenance
- Make sure your vehicle is stocked to help get you out of trouble or to keep you safe until help arrives. Keep blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, and flares or emergency lights in your vehicle. Even if you don’t need them, they can be used to help someone else in need on the road.
